As a writer, there’s no greater honor than to write the cover story for a magazine. It’s an even greater honor to have my own original photography accompany my published words. But, the icing on the cake is physically gracing the cover. I landed this trifecta in the current (Spring 2013) issue of Positive Magazine.

This issue is especially epic for me because my work for the cover story Someday Starts Now started more than a year ago in discussions with Positive Publisher Sam Wilder.

The story is about all of those things that live on our bucket list that we never quite get around to achieving. For my fortieth birthday I set out on a journey putting that list in motion with the hope that through my deeply personal story, I would inspire others to use set their own lists in motion.

My journey took me through four countries in Southeast Asia – Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. The first item on my list was catching the Giant Mekong Catfish – a dream I had since I was a little girl to catch a fish as big as me.

Through my words and photography, I take reader’s imaginations through crumbling ancient temples at sunrise and on the back of an elephant in the jungle. I take their senses through fresh green tea and coffee plantations and to the largest waterfalls that one can imagine. I take them through the excitement of realizing a dream, coming to terms with loss and appreciating the true gifts in life based on the lessons I learned along the way.

The end result is a deeply honest account of the way a place can inspire and influence your life (the theme of the current issue of Positive). My conclusion is that the bucket lists we set aside for extra special occasions with things that dangle like carrots to move us forward –should guide our lives. If this happened we would live with passion and fulfillment.

My work with Positive Magazine is such a trade from the daily onslought of negative news I was accustomed to reporting during my on-camera television news years. It is a tremendous publication that values substantive content. I am honored to share this kind of content with such a high caliber publication.

I am thrilled to share one of my most prized pieces of work and my photography. I am also thankful to my other half, David Peters, for providing permission to use some of his photography of me during this journey. In fact, the fantastic cover photo is his and pretty much sums up the entire experience.

I hope you will enjoy the article and consider subscribing to Positive Magazine. In the meantime — sit back and relax as Someday Starts Now!
